Applied Statistics

Base Knowledge

Preliminary data analysis and graphical representation.

Teaching Methodologies

In order to achieve the objectives of the curricular unit and conference of the competencies provided to the student, the learning process is based on the study of cases, accompanied by a set of instructions and statistical/computer tools that lead the student to analyze each case and draw conclusions; in the execution of practical work of applying theoretical concepts with Microsoft Excel; in the bibliographic research necessary to complement the information obtained in the classes.

Learning Results

The goal of this curricular unit is to promote the following skills:

1) Understand statistical language and notation;

2) Numerically and graphically organize the results of the use of different statistical methodologies.

3) Correctly interpret numerical and graphic results.

4) Use Analysis Toolpak within Microsoft Excel.

Program

Module 1 (50%):

1. Descriptive statistics.
2. Probability distributions. Discrete and continuous one-dimensional random variables. Common distributions: discrete and continuous.

Module 2 (50%):

3. Analysis of variance (One-way).
4. Simple linear regression.

Grading Methods

Continuous Assessment:

  • Minimum attendance in classes – Regulamento Académico dos Cursos Técnicos Superiores Profissionais da ESAC
  • Module 1 (M1) - Assesses learning outcomes from chapters 1 and 2. Weight: 50%

           Test 1 (T1 - 35%)   +   Group work 1 (TG1 - 15%)

  • Module 2 (M2) - Assesses learning outcomes from chapters 3 and 4. Weight: 50%

           Test 2 (T2 - 35%)   +   Group work 2 (TG2 - 15%)

Minimum grade per module of 7.5 values. Exams and group work are mandatory. To pass the continuous assessment, the student must obtain a grade equal to or higher than 7.5 in each module and a final weighted grade equal to or higher than 9.5 values (scale 0-20).

Assessment by Exam:

Exam to assess both modules.

If the student has obtained a minimum grade of 7.5 in one of the modules during continuous assessment, he may reuse the grade for that module. When taking the exam in only one module, the minimum grade of 7.5 values remains the same. Approval in the curricular unit depends on obtaining a minimum grade of 9.5 values in the final assessment (scale 0-20).

Grade Improvement - 100% Exam.
