Organic Farming

Base Knowledge

This is an introductory course, although knowledge of organic farming and general agriculture is an asset.

Teaching Methodologies

The development of the theoretical component is carried out using the expository method and presentation of specific materials, using participatory strategies of exposure and practical examples, as well as the possible use of videos, slideshows and documentaries, to complement the information on the topics in question; The organization of seminars with guest speakers and study visits, is also to be considered. The preparation of papers on topics important to AB involving the observation and discussion of the class, is part of the practice of UC, it is intended that the student structure it and apply the knowledge acquired in situations with their applicability. Preparation of written tests, one in each module. Research assignment and oral presentation with discussion.

As a learning outcome, it is intended that the student acquires the following notions:

Knows which websites are the most important to access information on AB.

Knows the history of organic farming and understands the genesis of organic farming in the face of agricultural intensification versus sustainability.

Know the organic farming movements and the principles of organic farming.

Know the National Strategy for Organic Farming and the statistics associated with organic farming

Knows to consult the Legislation in Organic Farming

Techniques for implementation and demonstration of production technologies in Organic Farming. Advantages, management, most relevant characteristics and the framing in production systems of the autochthonous breeds of different livestock species in Organic farming. Organization and operation of herd books. Grids for the scoring of animals. The PA technician, as an agent of change in the agricultural rural world, facing sustainability.

Research, experimentation, and demonstration. Recognition of volunteers as indicators of fertility and soil type. Cultural practices in AB

Genealogical books and preservation of native breeds. The environment of the manor of origin of native breeds and morpho-functional characteristics of the traditional production system. Native breeds of the main livestock species and integration into production systems. Preservation of morpho-functional characteristics of indigenous breeds, in view of the explicit productivity feature in their improvement. Changes in the rural context and intervention of the AB technician in the neo-liberal and food sovereignty models. Concept of rural and interdependence with the urban; multifunctionality of agriculture and territorial sustainability.

Module 1 (63%) + Module 2 (37%) = 100%.

A student is considered approved when they have achieved a weighted average of the module grades equal to or higher than 9.5 (on a scale of 0 to 20) and a grade of 7.5 or higher in each of the modules.
