Grading Methods

In accordance with the Academic Regulations for the 1st Cycle of Studies at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, students may choose from the following assessment methods:

1) CONTINUOUS/PERIODIC ASSESSMENT:
This methodology is based on a combination of the following assessment elements:
MA1. - 60% - Completion of 2 tests (MA1.1 and MA1.2) during the academic term, which represent a weighting of 60% for the final grade of the Accounting of Companies course unit. Each test will be graded out of a total of 6 points. In each test, a minimum grade of 2.4 points is required (40% of the grade for each test). This test is closed-book, and only a non-graphing calculator may be used.

MA2. - 20% - Completion of small classroom activities, worth 20% of the final grade for the course. These assessment moments do not need to be communicated to students in advance.

MA3. - 20% - Completion of a group project, composed of 2/3 students, with oral presentation and discussion on a topic from the program, worth 20% of the final grade for the subject.
Attendance requirement: only students who attended 80% of the classes taught have access to this form of assessment. Absence from classes where assessments occur implies the loss of this assessment.

The student's final grade (CF) is obtained by applying the following formula:
CF = [30% * MA1. 1.] + [30% * MA1. 2.] + [20% * MA2] + [20% * MA3].

The student will pass if they achieve a final grade, rounded to the nearest whole number, equal to or greater than 10 (ten) points.

2) ASSESSMENT BY EXAMINATION:

MA4. This assessment consists of a written test (Exam) covering all the material taught, to be held on the dates defined by ISCAC for the regular assessment periods, and with a maximum duration of 2h30m.
• Access to the exam assessment is governed by the regulations.
• This test is closed-book, and only a non-graphing calculator may be used.
• Students who achieve a final grade, rounded to the nearest whole number, equal to or greater than 10 (ten) points will pass.
• Students with a final grade equal to or greater than 16 points may be required to take an oral exam. In this case, the oral exam will account for 40% of the final grade. If students summoned for the oral exam choose not to take it, a final grade of 15 will be assigned.

Note - In the event of well-founded suspicion of fraud detected during the exam correction phase, the student will be summoned to take an oral exam to verify the knowledge and skills demonstrated. This verification is carried out by a panel composed of the UC professor and two other professors from the same area. If the student fails to prove they possess the knowledge and skills demonstrated in the written exam, the exam will be invalidated.
