Pathology of the Audiovestibular System II

Base Knowledge

The course was designed to systematically, thoroughly, and individually address each vestibular disorder, in accordance with the most recent international standards in vestibular medicine. Practical situations will be illustrated through the presentation of clinical cases.

For approval, students’ knowledge in Anatomy and physiology is mandatory, whose knowledge may be reassessed whenever they are relevant to the curricular unit.

Teaching Methodologies

The classes will be based on the expository learning method and serve to direct the student to the fundamental aspects of vestibular pathology.

Learning Results

The student should be able to:
1.To acquire knowledge of epidemiology and etiology of vestibular diseases.
2.Understand the pathophysiology of vestibular disorders.
3.Identify and characterize the main vestibular disorders, taking into account signs and symptoms.
4.Understand the use of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) to assess the impact of vestibular dysfunction across functional, physical, emotional, and quality of life domains.
5.Correlate clinical presentation with vestibular test results.
6.Be familiar with the main diagnoses and differential diagnoses.
7.Have an overview of existing medical and surgical treatments and their impact on vestibular function.

Program

Epidemiology of vestibular syndromes, disorders and diseases

The main vestibular syndromes (Acute, Episodic and Chronic vestibular syndromes, and differential diagnosis).

Acute Vestibular syndrome (infectious, inflammatory, vascular, trauma, intoxication, metabolic, ..)

Episodic Vestibular syndrome (bppv, vestibular migraine, recurrent vertigo of childhood, Meniere Disease, Vestibular paroxysmia, motion sickness, mal de debarquement, other central diseases)

Chronic Vestibular syndrome (unilateral and bilateral vestibulopathy, degenerative, central positional vertigo, functional vestibular disorders (3PD, persistent mal de debarquement), psychiatric disorders, other central disease)

Vestibular manifestations of systemic disease fitting into the vestibular syndromes ( Syphilis, mitochondrial disorders, Autoimmune, Genetic, infection, inflammatory)
