Applied Research in Clinical Physiology I

Base Knowledge

Statistics;

Core areas of Clinical Physiology.

Teaching Methodologies

Teaching in the theoretical-practical matrix is expository in nature with the use of audiovisual media that promote the active participation of students. The use of computer material using data processing software as well as their interpretation.

Learning Results

The student must acquire:

 knowledge

 • research methodologies applied to the health sciences, including the organization and analysis and interpretation of data.

• On the importance of clinical audit and evidence-based practice, including conducting research, with associated ethical principles.

 Aptitudes

 • carry out a research project adopting the adequate methodologies, employing proper statistical procedures being able to make decisions.

• critically evaluating scientific literature and developing a logic thinking about how to conduct competitive research.

Skills

• integrate in professional practice the results published in scientific literature

• translate scientific knowledge to clinical practice, assuring the best practices to patients

• present and publish the results obtained in the context of clinical audits and/or multidisciplinary applied research.

Program

Stages of an investigation: formulation of the research question or problem, exploration, the problem, construction of an analysis model, observation, analysis of results, discussion,
limitations and conclusions;
How to communicate scientific findings; Critical analysis of scientific articles;
Internal structure of a scientific work suited to each research methodology;
Research Ethics;

Grading Methods

The final assessment will have a continuous assessment component (completion of the tasks defined throughout the semester) and the assessment of a written research project, which will be the basis for the research project to be implemented in the 4th year, in the Research Curricular Unit applied in Clinical Physiology II. The final grade will result from a weighted average, with the Research Project component contributing 80% and the other tasks contributing with 20% to the final grade of the Curricular Unit. This Curricular Unit will not be subject of an Examination (Written Test), in accordance with the provisions of the Academic Regulation in force at ESTeSC for Applied Research courses. Approval to the UC will take place when the final grade is equal to or greater than 10 points.
