Veterinary Pharmacy

Basic knowledge in fundamental areas, namely Pharmacology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Immunology.

1. Theoretical framework with presentation of theoretical and theoretical-practical material using slides, promoting an appropriate articulation of the theoretical and practical programme;
2. Resolution/discussion of practical cases, individually and in groups;
3. Bibliographic research for the presentation and discussion of cases/topics;
4. Counselling practice, including role-playing, with simulation of the professional context in counselling on Veterinary Pharmacy products;
5. Written assignments with oral presentation of topics;
6. Seminars/webinars;
7. Platforms/quizzes.

This UC aims to develop skills and competences in the scope of veterinary pharmacy focusing community pharmacy.
For this purpose, it is intended that the student acquire knowledge in various areas of veterinary medicine, with an impact on animal, human or environmental health, including food safety.
It aims to identify the risk of using medicines in animals, identifying the main zoonoses, their relevance in the scope of animal health and public health.
Within the scope of the most common requests and complaints in community pharmacy, it seeks to know the main clinical indications and main restrictions associated with medicines use.
Student must be able to identify reliable sources of information in the veterinary context, developing and supporting each topic, and being capable to communicate it, individually or in groups, to their interlocutors.
Finally, counseling in an autonomous way, through simple and objective communication skills, is required.

Theme 5 – Antimicrobials in veterinary medicine: One-health perspective
Theme 6 – Ectoparasites and endoparasites.
External and Internal Antiparasitic drugs.
Theme 7 – Dermatitis and dermatoses
Theme 8 – Livestock species and food safety.
Theme 9 – Complementary approaches in veterinary
Veterinary Compounding; Supplements, Hygiene Products, Cosmetics.
Theme 10 – Pharmacotherapy and counseling for companion animals.

The final grade is obtained by the weighted average of the two components, with a minimum of 9.5 points in each assessment.

The topics of seminars and student presentations may be subject to continuous or final assessment.
