Postgraduate Course in Phage Therapy and Microbial Resistance

Course Objectives

The postgraduate course in phage therapy and microbial resistance aims to qualify health professionals by optimizing their scientific and technical skills in the work context and increasing their degree of specialization. Antibiotic resistance is on the rise, raising public health concerns. The World Health Organization has declared it one of the ten greatest threats to global health. Infections by multidrug-resistant agents such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli, which are increasingly difficult to treat, are particularly relevant. Nosocomial infections are especially dangerous, resulting in higher mortality and high health expenditures. Thus, it is urgent to implement new approaches to combat bacterial infections, as an alternative or in combination with antibiotic therapy.
In this context, phage therapy, recently approved in Portugal, has been arousing increasing interest, constituting one of the alternatives to be applied in some therapeutic contexts.
This type of therapy is based on the application of lytic bacteriophages, which specifically recognize and eliminate bacteria, their natural host.
