Basic knowledge of geometric design of roads, geotechnics and construction materials.

 

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical-practical classes have an expository, critical analysis and discussion component associated with learning applicable solutions
and technologies and problem-solving methodologies. It is an environment for interaction with students but conducted guided. Group
learning takes place through specific project problem solving, with some complexity, which simulates professional practice and gives rise to
a written document submitted by the students for evaluation. In laboratory work, students conduct tests and prepare reports on the
procedures followed and the results achieved.

Learning Results

  • Master road and railway construction techniques: earthworks, road paving, railway infrastructure and superstructure and drainage.
  • Know how to prepare proposals for constructing and maintaining road pavements and road and railway drainage systems.
  • Describe the constitution, general inspection, and rehabilitation techniques of railway tracks.
  • Design and analyse urban mobility planning proposals.

Program

1. EARTHWORKS: earthmoving (haul mass diagram); soil characterisation tests; geological and geotechnical studies; running and control of
earthworks; soil stabilisation; subgrade of roads and railways; applications of geosynthetics in transport infrastructures.

2. ROAD PAVING: Types of pavement; constitution of pavement layers; binders and aggregates for pavements; bituminous mixtures; design
of hot bituminous mixtures; manufacture and application of bituminous mixtures and concrete; simplified design of pavements; behaviour
and pathologies of flexible pavements; maintenance techniques for flexible pavements.

3. CONSTITUTION, INSPECTION AND REHABILITATION OF RAILWAY: Infrastructure and superstructure; rail track inspection and rehabilitation.

4. DRAINAGE: surface and underground drainage; constitution of drainage systems and their hydraulic design.

5. ORGANIZATION OF URBAN MOBILITY: road hierarchy; traffic calming techniques; infrastructures for active mobility.

Grading Methods

The assessment includes a MANDATORY Final Examination component and a MANDATORY Projects component. This requirement applies to all examination periods: the regular, resit, and special sittings.

 1. FINAL EXAMINATION

 Students sit a Final Examination (FE) worth 20 marks, comprising a theoretical component and a problem-solving component: 10 marks for the theoretical part and 10 marks for the practical part.

 2. CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

  •  During TP classes, short tests and/or in-class questions will be administered, accounting for 20% of the theoretical component's final mark (2 marks). For the final mark of the theoretical component, the higher of the following two values will be considered: the result of the short tests and/or in-class questions; 20% of the theoretical component mark obtained in the Final Examination.
  •  The mandatory projects account for 20% of the final mark (4 marks).
  •  During OT/PL classes, problems will be analysed and/or laboratory tests carried out, requiring the preparation of reports independently outside class time. These reports account for 10% of the final mark (2 marks).

3. REQUIREMENTS FOR PASSING

 Passing the course unit requires cumulative compliance with the following requirements:

 - A minimum mark in the Final Examination of 45% of the total exam (9 marks), with at least 30% in each component. Students whose marks do not meet these requirements will receive the following notation in the course unit record: NRC – does not meet the requirements.

 - Completion of all mandatory projects.

 - A Final Mark (FM), calculated according to the following formula: FM = 0.7 × FE + Projects + Reports.

 4. ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT

 The regulations in force at the institution shall apply to all cases of attempted or actual academic misconduct. Whenever there is doubt regarding the occurrence of academic misconduct in the Final Examination, short tests, projects or reports, the lecturer reserves the right to require the student to provide clarification in the form of an oral examination on the relevant content. If the clarification is insufficient to fully resolve the situation, the mark obtained will not be considered and may result in FAILURE.
