Teaching Methodologies
The following teaching methodologies are used in this curricular unit:
1) Verbal methods (say), making use of the following educational resources: Exposition, Explanation, Dialogue and questioning;
2) Intuitive Methodologies (show), making use of the following educational resources: Demo, Audiovisual, written texts;
3) Active Methodologies (to do), making use of pedagogical resources: problem solving; technology.
Learning Results
As this is a curricular unit in the area of basic sciences, it is intended that students develop competencies of interpretation, calculation and relational skills that are relevant to the acquisition of knowledge and skills in other curricular units.
In particular, it is intended that students:
a) remember and apply knowledge related to Set Theory and Logic.
b) compute matrices operations and apply this knowledge to solve problems, namely those that involve solving systems of linear equations.
c) understand and apply differential calculus techniques in IR and IR^n and integral calculus techniques in IR.
Program
1. Topics of Differential and Integral Calculus in IR:
- review of derivation rules in IR;
- integration in IR.
2. Topics of Differential Calculus in IR^n:
- vector variable functions;
- partial derivatives.
3. Logic and Set theory:
- representation of sets, relation of belonging and inclusion of sets;
- operations on sets: reunion, intersection, difference and complementation;
- definition and logical value of a proposition;
- propositional calculation: negation, conjunction, disjunction of propositions;
- truth tables.
4. Matrices and Systems of Linear Equations:
- matrix algebra;
- matrix condensation;
- solving systems of linear equations;
- inverse of a matrix;
- determinants: Laplace’s theorem;
- adjugate matrix.

Students may choose two alternative assessment models: periodic assessment and final exam assessment. Each student will have to choose the desired model immediately after doing the 1st test.
Periodic evaluation
Two tests will be carried out, each one quoted for 10 values. To pass the course, the student must simultaneously have:
- Minimum classification of 3.25 values in the first test;
- Sum of the ratings of the two tests greater than or equal to 9.5 values;
- Attended at least 60% of the classes up to the date of each assessment test (this requirement may not apply to students with "student worker" status or students in other situations, which will be analyzed on a case-by-case basis. )
The 1st test refers to the syllabus of chapters 1 and 2 and will be held in person after the 8th week of the semester, in a date to be
defined. The 2nd test corresponds to chapters 3 and 4 and will be held on the date set for the regular season exam. In the exam of the appeal period, students included in the continuous assessment may choose to take an exam on the whole subject or a test corresponding to the 1st test or the 2nd test. Access to the appeal period requires prior registration with the academic services. In the normal period, the student who opted for continuous assessment will only be able to take the 2nd test.
Assessment by final examination
In the exams of the normal, recourse and special periods, there will be exams on the entire subject, with the student who obtains a grade greater than or equal to 9.5 values being approved. In the special season exam, there will be only one full exam exam. The conditions for access to this period will be defined later by the Presidency of ISEC. Students with a classification greater than or equal to seventeen values may be required to take a test to defense of grade
