Teaching Methodologies

The expository and inquisitive method is used during the presentation of the different concepts in Theoretical-Practical classes, with analyzes of case studies. The practical group works, to be carried out by the students, consist ssentially of concrete applications of the studied subjects. In classes there will be opportunities to follow up the learning, by clarifying theoretical doubts, monitoring the analyzes carried out and guiding practical work, following a methodology of self-learning and communication.

Learning Results

Goals: Understanding and analyzing the main characteristics and conditions of roads and streets, as transportation infrastructures, focusing in particular on their geometric definition, construction and conservation technologies.

Generic Skills: Application of knowledge and understanding; Conducting judgment and decision making; Communication; Self-learning;

Specific Skills: Acquiring knowledge and understanding skills in interpreting the geometric definition of roads and streets, including at-level intersections in urban areas; knowing how to analyze the operating conditions of roads and streets; framing the various aspects of road safety linked to the infrastructure; provide students with knowledge in the area of construction technologies for transportation infrastructures, regarding earthworks, paving and drainage; aquiring skills related to transport infrastructure conservation methodologies.

Program

1. Functions, financing and operation of road and rail infrastructures;

2. Layout: interpretation of the geometric definition in transportation infrstructure designs;

3. Earthworks: earth movement and distribution, soil characterization in earthworks;

4. Asset management: level of service and capacity analysis ;

5. RRoad safety management: safety fostering programmes; accident rate indicators, detection of accident hotspots, interventions to improve road safety;

6. Paving: functional and structural performance of pavements; quality control tests; constitution and track characteristics of urban railway infrastructures.

7. Road conservation: behavior, pathologies and actions for road pavement conservation.

8. Drainage: functions and constitution of different surface and underground drainage solutions, aspects taken into account in their design.

Grading Methods

The knowledge assessment will be based on two components, each with a weight of 50% in the Final Grade [NF]:

       i.          practical works;

      ii.          two written tests or exam.

Regarding practical works:

They will be carried out in groups of (up to) 3 elements, related to the different topics covered during the semester, and must be delivered as indicated in the respective instructions. The grade [TP] will correspond to the arithmetic average of the grades of the various works. Students who express the impossibility of carrying out this work in groups will do the work individually.

Regarding the tests:

Two tests will be carried out during the semester, in dates anounced on the first week of classes, covering the subjects taught so far, which will correspond to grades T1 and T2. The global test score [NT] will be calculated by: NT=(T1+T2)/2. After the completion of the two tests, a 'frequency grade’ will be assigned. If a student doesn’t take the tests, the information 'Admitted to the exam' will be assigned.

If NT<42.5%, (corresponding to 8.5 points, out of 20), then NF=NT;

If NT≥42.5% and if, simultaneously, (TP+NT)/2≥47.5% (corresponding to 9.5 points, out of 20), then the Final Grade will be given by NF=(TP+NT) /2 and will pass the curricular unit by frequency, with the grade released before the exam period. Otherwise, it will be necessary to take an exam, not being able to do it in the Normal season, but only in the Appeal or Special season.

Regarding the exam:

In each of the periods established for this purpose (according to the school calendar) a written exam will be carried out, relating to the totality of the taught subject, which will correspond to an Examination Grade [NE].

If NE<42.5% then NF=NE;

If NE≥42.5% and if, simultaneously, (TP+NE)/2≥47.5%, then the Final Grade will be given by NF=(TP+NE)/2 and the student obtains approval in this curricular unit.

Final grades greater than 16 points, out of 20, must be defended orally (optional – not doing so determines a Final Grade of 16 points).
