Teaching Methodologies

The planned teaching methodologies include expository and inquiry-based approaches, as well as problem-solving and project development, both individually and in groups. Written and oral presentations of reports are also expected to develop written and oral communication skills.

Learning Results

This course aims to introduce students to the issues of sustainability and sustainable development and their connection to the construction sector.

The concepts of sustainability will be introduced, and some of the principal methodologies used to assess sustainability in construction will be presented.
The evolution of urban regeneration concepts and methodologies will be discussed, along with their connection to and contribution to sustainable development.

Skills related to analyzing the construction process from a sustainability perspective and creating proposals for its improvement. Generic skills in communication, research, self-learning, evaluation, and decision-making.

Urban regeneration vs sustainability; impacts on energy efficiency, environment and biodiversity, economic and social development
Urban Rehabilitation in Portugal: Characterization of the housing stock; Urban Rehabilitation in Portugal, perspectives, and potential
The future of cities (model cities, smart cities, etc.)

2. Sustainability and Rehabilitation Towards nZEB Buildings

Concept of nZEB Buildings
Building Rehabilitation in the nZEB Context
European Directives and legislation; Strategies; Active and passive rehabilitation solutions; Integration of renewable energy systems; Incentives and barriers associated with rehabilitation projects

3. Sustainability Assessment Methodologies and Tools for Construction

Grading Methods

Assignments/Practical Work/Projects: 14 points

2 Tests / Final Exam: 6 points

Approval requires a minimum overall score of 9.5 points, with students needing to achieve at least 50% in exams/tests/assignments/projects. For final scores above 16 points, an oral defence may be mandatory.

Exams (final, resit, and special exams) will preferably be written. However, they may take the form of an oral exam in situations where this is deemed more appropriate, particularly during Special Exam Periods and for Student Union Representatives.
