Base Knowledge

Not applicable.

Teaching Methodologies

Expository teaching method and practical work.

Learning Results

Acquisition of knowledge regarding risks in urban environments, regarding their identification, causes, effects (in the territory and/or built environment) and mitigation measures.

Development of specific skills in risk analysis and proposing preventive measures and controlling the effects of the most likely disasters in the Portuguese context: floods, landslides, earthquakes and urban fires.

Program

1. Urban risks and urban resilience: typology, assessment, vulnerability and urban adaptation, risk cartography.

2. Floods

Impact of human activity on the hydrological cycle; Management of floods originating in urban areas; Flood management in riverside areas.

3. Landslides

Types of slopes and geological concepts; Slope instability (causes and correction works); Sliding surfaces and rupture surfaces; Stability of embankments and excavations.

4. Earthquakes

Fundamental notions of seismology; Effects of earthquakes on structures and constructions; Basic principles on the quantification of seismic action; Structural systems to resist earthquakes; Measures to minimize the effect of earthquakes.

5. Urban fires:

Fundamental concepts about fires in buildings; National legislation; Fire risk analysis methods in buildings; Protection of structural elements against fire; Emergency plans; Understanding emergency signaling in buildings; Fire Risk Analysis in the Urban-Forest Interface, and in the Industrial-Forest Interface.

Grading Methods

- A Final Exam (FE) is carried out, evaluated for 20 points, which consists of theoretical-practical questions;

- Practical Work (TP) is subject to oral and individual presentation and is worth 50% of the final grade, being evaluated for 20 points. The Practical Work is mandatory.

- The final grade will be NF=0.5(EF+TP);

A minimum rating of 9.5/20 is required in all assessment elements.

Attendance in two-thirds of classes is mandatory. Students who do not attend two-thirds of classes will not be admitted to any exam for the current academic year.

- All practical assignments must be presented and defended on dates to be agreed with the respective instructor. Students who do not submit any practical assignments by the deadline will not be admitted to any exam for the current academic year.
