Technology and Computer Architecture

Base Knowledge

Students should have user-level computer skills and be proactive in interacting with the computer and other computer systems, ideally with knowledge of configuring computer equipment and applications.

They should have a knowledge of maths that allows them to make calculations and distinguish between decimal, binary and hexadecimal systems.

Knowledge of the English language is strongly recommended, preferably in technical English (Computer Science).

Teaching Methodologies

Expository, demonstrative and interrogative lectures, methods applicable according to the context of the learning content.

Practical demonstrative, interrogative and active classes to apply the concepts of the theoretical classes.

Learning Results

Objectives:

This training unit is aimed at acquiring skills that enable a global understanding of the main aspects, technologies and protocols involved in data networking.

The aim is also to acquire basic skills in configuring and testing active and terminal equipment in environments made up of several interconnected networks.

 

Competences:

  • Identify the concepts underlying data communication networks
  • List the main technologies used in data transmission
  • Explain and illustrate data flow through protocol stacks
  • Explain the general aspects of the structuring and composition, in physical terms, of a local network.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the main application-level protocols of the TCP/IP stack
  • Install and configure basic data networks
  • Define IP addressing plans with fixed and variable size masks

Grading Methods

According to the ISEC CTeSP regulations, attendance at at least 75 per cent of the total hours of the course unit is compulsory to obtain attendance. This condition is valid for access to all assessments to be carried out in the 2024/2025 academic year

Students who fulfil the attendance exemption criteria laid down by law are exempt from this regime.

 

The UC will be assessed by continuous assessment, which consists of four written theoretical-practical tests, carried out in class.

 

The student's approval by continuous assessment is conditional on fulfilment of the following requirements:

      a)    Attendance at at least 75% of the total hours of the course unit;

      b)    There will be 4 continuous assessment tests;

      c)    The final grade will be obtained from the weighted average of the continuous assessment marks.

      d)    Each written test will contribute 25% to the final grade;

      e)    The final grade must have a minimum of 9.5 points, on a scale of 0-20 points, in the ‘UC final classification’, calculated using the following expression:

               UC final classification = 0.25 * A + 0.25* B + 0.25 * C + 0.25* D

 

Additional rules for continuous assessment:

      a)    1 handwritten A4 page is allowed for consultation during the test.

      b)    At the end of the test, the consultation sheet must be handed in dated and signed.

      c)    Printed or photocopied sheets are not permitted.

      d)    The use of any technological means during the written test is not permitted.
