Learning Results

This course aims to provide students with programming skills and their application in the development of applications for mobile devices.

Students are expected to acquire skills in:

  • Developing object-oriented applications for mobile devices;
  • Using classes for input/output and data collection;
  • Developing event-driven console and graphical applications;
  • Developing applications for mobile devices, taking into account their specific characteristics and limitations;
  • Developing applications adapted to the environments in which they are executed.

 

Program

  • Introduction to mobile device architecture.
  • Object-oriented mechanisms: Classes, objects, object lifecycle: constructors and destructors, members, member redefinition. Inner classes.
  • Organisation of classes into modules. Access levels to classes and their members.
  • Composition and inheritance.
  • Polymorphism. Abstract classes.
  • Exception handling. Files.
  • Graphical interface.
  • Concepts of mobile computing, distributed computing and ubiquitous systems.
  • Android system architecture. Application components: Activities, Services, Content Providers and Broadcast Receivers.
  • Graphical interface in Android.
  • Data storage. SQLite, Serialisation. JSON.
  • Communication. Access to web services. Connectivity technologies.
  • Location and Maps.
  • Application distribution.

Grading Methods

All students must ensure that their mailbox is operational, read daily, and has sufficient space to receive regular mail in order to maintain a reliable channel of communication with the conductor. Deadlines and other elements communicated by email and not met may result in failure of the course unit.

The assessment methodology designated by the School of M1 will be adopted in this Course Unit (CU). As clarified in an email from the Vice-President of ISEC (19/11/2021; 18:07), in this methodology, assessment is carried out through continuous and/or periodic assessment, ending before the exam period, with no subsequent assessment/exam.

Students who have special status, duly recognised by Academic Services, which prevents them from attending classes on a regular basis for formally justified reasons, must communicate this fact in a duly documented manner by email to the lecturer as soon as possible so that alternative assessment times can be scheduled, compatible with the impediments justified by the student's status. It is also the responsibility of these students to follow the course from the beginning of the semester and to maintain regular contact with the lecturer by email and through Nónio.

Students who attended the previous edition without passing but with the minimum required attendance (75% or more of classes, including justified absences) should proceed as described above for students who are under special status that prevents them from regularly attending the course.

Any student unable to attend an assessment at a specific time, with a justification validated by the course coordinator, must notify the lecturer by email as soon as possible so that an alternative assessment date can be found.

The final grade for the Course Unit (CU) is calculated by weighting:

  • Written test (20%)
  • Practical Project Development (40%)
  • Written Report (20%)
  • Oral Presentation (20%)
