Base Knowledge
Basic knowledge in Physics.
Teaching Methodologies
The curricular unit is organized into theoretical classes. Classes are dedicated to the exposition and discussion of the subjects taught. They are complemented with commented resolution of theoretical-practical applications.
Learning Results
The aim of this course is to give students basic concepts and scientific basis of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. The student should be able to: Understand the basic laws of thermodynamics, particularly at the level of fluid behaviour and theoretical thermodynamic cycles and their applications; Understand and be able to apply the laws of fluid mechanics to incompressible fluids in pipes; Understand the various mechanisms of heat transfer; Select pipes thermal insulation; Identify and solve problems involving heat transfer.
Program
Module 1 – Thermodynamics – Fundamental concepts. Properties of pure substances. Application of the first law of Thermodynamics to open systems and closed systems. Introduction to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Thermodynamic cycles.
Module 2 – Fluid Mechanics – Fluid properties. Static of fluids. Flow characteristics. Laminar flow in pipes. Turbulent flow in pipes.
Module 3 – Heat Transfer – Modes of heat transfer. Heat transfer equations. Steady state one-dimensional conduction: Flat walls; Cylindrical systems. Selection of pipes thermal insulation. Heat exchangers fins. Heat exchangers. Temperature and heat flux sensors.
