Teaching Methodologies

  • Theoretical Lessons: Presentation of fundamental concepts, protocols, and basic network services to provide essential skills for practical lessons.
  • Practical Lessons: Hands-on development of study, design, and implementation of network services.

Throughout the course unit, gamification techniques will also be used to enhance learning.

Learning Results

The objective of the course is to provide students with the necessary resources to understand, configure, and manage essential services for the operation of any network. The course unit approaches these services from a multiplatform perspective, covering services in Linux and Windows operating systems, as well as Cisco devices.

Program

  1.     Dynamic addressing (DHCP).
  2.     Name resolution (DNS).
  3.     Remote access (VPNs).
  4.     Proxy services.
  5.     Clock synchronization services (NTP).
  6.     Application of concepts in enterprise network configuration.
  7.     Virtualization services.

Grading Methods

All students must ensure that their mailbox is operational, checked daily, and has sufficient space to receive regular emails to maintain a reliable communication channel with the instructor. Deadlines and other elements communicated via email that are not met may result in failure of the course unit.

The assessment methodology called M1, as defined by the School, will be adopted for this Course Unit. As clarified in an email from the Vice-President of ISEC (2021/11/19; 18:07), this methodology consists of continuous and/or periodic assessment, concluding before the exam period, with no additional evaluation or final exam taking place afterward.

Students with a special status, formally recognized by the Academic Services, who are unable to attend classes regularly due to justified reasons, must notify the course instructor as soon as possible via a properly documented email. This will allow for alternative assessment arrangements that align with the constraints justified by their special status. These students are also responsible for following the course from the beginning of the semester and maintaining regular contact via email and the Nónio platform with the instructor.

Students who attended the previous edition of the course but did not pass, while having attended at least 75% of the classes (including justified absences), must follow the same procedure as students with special status who are unable to attend regularly.

Any student unable to attend an evaluation moment due to a validated justification approved by the course coordinator must inform the instructor as soon as possible via email so that an alternative assessment date can be arranged.

The assessment consists of:

  • Continuous assessment with two mini-tests conducted in class, each contributing 25% to the final grade.
  • Periodic assessment with a final project, aimed at evaluating the skills acquired in the course through the configuration of various services in Linux, Windows, and Cisco environments. This project accounts for 50% of the final grade.
