Materiais de Construção

Base Knowledge

Basic knowledge of mathematics and physics.

Teaching Methodologies

The teaching method is essentially expository in theoretical classes and descriptive/collaborative in practical classes. The student is encouraged to carry out research on the various subjects and to discuss them with the other students and the teacher. Students are invited to solve practical exercises, first with the support of the teacher and then independently.

Learning Results

Develop skills in the various common building materials, providing general knowledge of their structure, production, behavior and applications.
Know the most frequently used building materials such as natural stone, ceramic materials, glass, metals, wood and its derivatives, binders, mortars and concrete.
Understand how different types of building materials are obtained and how they are manufactured.
Understand the main characteristics of the various materials, identifying the advantages and disadvantages of each according to the intended application, specifying the conditions of application.
Learn how to determine some fundamental properties of materials in the laboratory.

Program

– Fundamental concepts: Physical quantities and units; Mass and volumetric characteristics of materials; Mechanical characteristics of materials. Thermal characteristics of materials; Acoustic characteristics of materials.
– Natural stones: Petrographic characterization of the main stones used in construction; Examples of Portuguese natural stones; Current applications.
– Ceramic materials: Classification of ceramic materials; Raw materials; Manufacturing processes; Types of products, characteristics and applications.
– Glass: Types of glass; Manufacturing techniques, fundamental characteristics and applications.
– Metals: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals; Steel reinforcement, production, characteristics and applications; Aluminum for window frames; Bronzes; Zinc; Copper alloys.

Grading Methods

Passing the course unit can be achieved in two ways:

  • periodic assessment
  • final exam.

The periodic assessment component may take the form of individual or group practical work and/or assessment tests, with a minimum value of 25% for each. Passing requires a mark of at least 9.5 in the sum of all the assignments/tests.

Final exam covering all the material taught.

For final grades above 17, an oral defense may be requested.

Students who do not achieve the minimum mark will be given a final overall mark of 7.00.

The exam will preferably be written, but may take the form of an oral exam in situations where this proves to be more appropriate, namely in Special Seasons and for Association Leaders.

Students must attend at least 75% of all theoretical and practical classes in order to take any kind of assessment, except in the cases identified in the legislation in force
