Basic knowledge of mathematics and Portuguese.

Teaching Methodologies

Theory-practice classes, where concepts are presented, followed by their application in problem-solving using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word software.

Learning Results

Overall goal: To understand how a spreadsheet and a word processor work, and the potential of using them. To use the spreadsheet as a tool to solve real-world problems in the different areas of knowledge covered throughout the course. To link the spreadsheet and the word processor with the specific skills and technologies from other subjects.

Skills to develop:

  • Identify the main operational features of Microsoft Excel related to storing, organizing, and analyzing data, as well as presenting results;
  • Build, interpret, and solve real (simple) problems, including carrying out “what-if” analyses;
  • Develop algorithmic thinking;
  • Identify the main operational features of Microsoft Word related to basic text processing, editing, and formatting;
  • Enhance the text with tables, charts, indexes, captions, headers, footers, and references for presenting results.

Program

1. Word Processing: Microsoft Word:

  • Basic concepts: interface;
  • Basic editing;
  • Character and paragraph formatting;
  • Text flow control: sections, pagination, columns;
  • Tables and charts;
  • Styles and templates;
  • Indexes, figure and table captions, headers and footers, cross-references, bibliographic references.

2. Spreadsheet: Microsoft Excel:

  • Basic concepts: interface;
  • Editing, formatting, and data validation;
  • Formulas and functions: statistical and mathematical functions, date and time, text, lookup, information, and reference functions;
  • Charts;
  • Data import and cleaning;
  • Data analysis: pivot tables; corresponding charts and What-If analyses.

Grading Methods

The student can choose continuous assessment or examination assessment.

To be eligible for continuous assessment, the student must have at least 75% attendance across all classes, that is, must be present for at least 42 hours of the 56 hours of scheduled contact.
To be eligible for examination assessment, the student must have at least 50% attendance across all classes, that is, must be present for at least 28 hours of the 56 hours of scheduled contact.

Continuous assessment:

Execute two tests during the semester - each test is worth 30%

Individual practical work done in class - 15%

Attendance and participation in class - 25%

Examination assessment:

Final exam - 100%

The student will pass if the final grade is higher than 9.5 out of 20.

Fraud

The current IPC and ISEC regulations will apply to all attempted or committed cases of academic fraud.

Whenever there are doubts about the occurrence of academic fraud, the teacher reserves the right to invite the student to provide clarification in the form of an oral examination.
