Basic knowledge of Descriptive Statistics.
Teaching Methodologies
The teaching methodologies used in this course are:
1) Verbal Methodologies (say), making use of pedagogical resources: Exposition, Explanation, Dialogue and Interrogation;
2) Intuitive Methodologies (show), making use of pedagogical resources: Demonstration, Audiovisuals and Written Texts;
3) Computational Methodologies (to do), making use of computational resources, namely Excel.
Learning Results
The objectives of this course are:
1. Recognize and relate notions of Statistics and Probability;
2. Organize, classify and relate data using statistical techniques;
3. Interpret results from the application of statistical techniques and methods;
4. Apply knowledge using computer tools.
Program
1. Descriptive Statistics: Classification of Data; Characterization of Univariate and Bivariate samples.
2. Elementary Theory of Probability: Probability; Conditional Probability; Combinatorial Calculus.
3. Random Variables – Probability Distribution: Function and Probability Density; Distribution Function; Parameters.
4. Characterization of some univariate distributions: Discrete and Continuous Distributions.
5. Sampling Distributions: Random sample estimator, estimation, sampling distribution.
6. Sampling: Sizing and composition of the sample; Collection, analysis and classification of samples; Statistical treatment of samples.
7. Confidence Intervals: Confidence interval for the population average, for the variance, for the standard deviation and for the ratio.
8. Hypothesis Tests: Test of significance: for average, for variances and for proportions.

1) The Periodic Evaluation comprises two tests (T1, T2) and one assignment including mandatory presentation (Tr). The final classification (CF) is obtained by calculating the weighted average of the classifications obtained as follows:
CF= 0.40*T1 + 0.40*T2 + 0.20*Tr
2) The Evaluation by Exam comprises the completion of an exam.
