Teaching Methodologies

The teaching methodologies used are intended to provide the transmission of knowledge in a clime
of dialogue with students, which favors and consolidates the teaching-learning process. The Curricular Unit is
taught in theoretical classes and in laboratory practical classes:

– In the theorics, the ground knowledge necessary for the development of contents and the acquisition of
defined skills are exposed. Students’ participation is sought in the adaptation of concepts, the resolution of
concrete situations, and exercises of a theoretical-practical nature can be presented and discussed in the
classroom.

– The laboratory component involves the execution of protocols, with the preparation of reports, requiring
the presence of students in practical classes in order to provide contact with the laboratory.

Learning Results

The objectives of the Curricular Unit Chemistry and Biochemistry II are:

  • Know the reactivity of the main functional groups of organic compounds
  • Know the structure and properties of biomolecules: carbohydrates, some types of lipids and proteins
  • Understand the mechanism of action of enzymes
  • Understand the processes: glycolysis, fermentation (alcoholic and lactic) and aerobic respiration
  • Understand the metabolism of carbohydrates and triglycerides

Program

  • Reactions of the main families of organic compounds.
  • Structure and properties of carbohydrates, some lipids and proteins.
  • Biological functions of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, in particular enzymes: general structure and
  • mechanism of action.
  • Glycolysis, alcoholic and lactic fermentation, and aerobic respiration
  • Metabolism of carbohydrates and triglycerides

Grading Methods

Continuous evaluation

Theoretical evaluation -75%

  • 1st Test (50%)
  • 2nd Test (50%)

Practical evaluation -25%

  • 2 Reports

Continuous assessment of the practical component implies mandatory attendance of practical classes,
meaning that the student has to attend at least 70% of the total number of practical classes taught.
The practical classification of students who do not comply with this mandatory attendance can be obtained
by means of a practical exam.

Conditions for approval by continuous assessment
The student is approved by continuous assessment, if simultaneously:

  • Fulfill the mandatory minimum attendance to practical classes
  • Obtain a final grade in the UC greater than or equal to 9.5 values

Final Grade Calculation for the UC: Final Grade = 0.25P + 0.75T

Conditions for approval by Final Exam

Assessment in the final exam applies to students who have not been approved by continuous assessment, as
long as they present a grade for the practical component obtained either by continuous assessment, or by a
practical exam. Grade improvement implies registration at the secretariat for this purpose.

The final classification of the Curricular Unit is calculated based on the classification of the final written exam
(75%) and the classification of the practical component obtained either in continuous assessment or in a
practical exam (25%).
