Teaching Methodologies
Exposure: to present the topics/content, raise issues and guide the learners’ approach;
Use of different case studies to co-create and discuss the topics under study;
Discussion and problem solving in small groups (4-5 learners), common or diverse tasks.
Learning Results
After completing the course unit, the student should know, understand and be able to:
Recognise emerging topics and areas of intervention for the physiotherapist, as well as the societal challenges of the 21st century to the physiotherapist;
Critically analyse new approaches and relate them to evidence-informed practice;
Evaluate the available evidence on the topics and emerging areas presented.
Affective skills and competences are thus obtained: growth in emotional/behavioural and attitudinal areas; and cognitive: reflective mental performance and knowledge.
Program
Presentation and critical discussion of emerging topics in Physiotherapy (15 hours), covering themes such as: telehealth and digital health; person-centred practice and humanisation of care; collaborative interprofessional care; professional advocacy; mental health and well-being of physiotherapists and users; pelvic and sexual health; physiotherapy in oncology; rehabilitation in complex chronic conditions; active and healthy ageing; approaches in palliative care; and inclusion of artificial intelligence in clinical practice, among others.
Reflection on contemporary societal challenges with ethical and professional implications for Physiotherapy (15 hours), including: ecology, sustainability and climate goals in health practice; the role of the physiotherapist in mitigating social inequalities and in contexts of humanitarian crisis; health promotion in vulnerable populations; gender health and diversity; domestic violence and the ethical responsibility of the physiotherapist in the face of abuse; prejudices such as ageism and racism in clinical practice; the impact of social networks on professional image and public health; human cooperation and empathy as fundamental skills for professional development; and the construction of inclusive and safe environments for all bodies and identities.
