Base Knowledge

The knowledge acquired in the Basic Sciences Curricular Units (Mathematics and Physics, in general), Human Anatomy and Physiology (I and II), and in the Electronics and Instrumentation Curricular Units, are recommended.

Teaching Methodologies

The teaching methodology comprises theoretical and theoretical-practical classes.

In theoretical classes, the concepts corresponding to the syllabus are presented orally.

In theoretical-practical classes, exercises related to the theoretical classes are carried out, and technical aspects of implementing the necessary instrumentation for each chapter of the subject are also addressed.

Some theoretical-practical classes (predictably 4) will be dedicated to seminars.

Learning Results

Acquire skills related to the understanding of biological and / or biomedical devices in its areas of collecting clinical information and of application of energy in a controlled manner.
Establish the link between the scientific and ­technological knowledge previously acquired about the physiological signal (physical or chemical), and the instrumentation chain that reads, processes, and monitors or provides relevant information.
Establish the functional link between the scientific­ and technological system or device that transforms the electrical energy available in a clinical / hospital setting into controlled energy of clinical meaning and usefulness.
Develop the ability to make decisions on the applicability of a bio­instrument in the aspects of clinical, economic and social significance.

Grading Methods

The assessment consists of:

  1. Synthesis and bibliographic review works, prepared in groups of 2 students (preferably), worth a total of 8 points;
  2. Written test, worth 12 points.

 

1. Synthesis Papers:

Each of the two synthesis and bibliographic review works will be graded with a maximum of 4 points, with no minimum grade required, and involves the submission of a written document, of a presentation to be used in the defense of the work, and the oral presentation and defense of the work during class time, in front of the class, according to the following schedule:

 1st work:

  • Announcement to students, and distribution among groups, of the available topics: between the 2nd and 3rd week of classes;
  • Submission of the written report and the presentation to be used in the defense: between the 6th and 7th week of classes;
  • Defense of the papers in front of the class: between the 7th and the 9th week of classes.

2nd work:

  • Disclosure to students and distribution to groups of available topics: between the 8th and 10th week of classes;
  • Submission of written report and presentation to be used in the defense: between 12th and 14th week of classes;
  • Defense of the assignments in front of the class: between the 13th and 15th week of classes.

Each of the two synthesis works are assessed only once in the scheduled days of the 2nd semester, and there is no possibility of improvement. The grade obtained in the assignments is valid for any exam season of the 2024/2025 academic year.

 

2. Written Exam:

The written exam, graded for a maximum of 12 points, and with no mandatory minimum grade, consists of the exams in force at ISEC, and is subject to the following general rules:

  • Students may use an A4 sheet (two pages) with of free content, the preparation of which is the sole responsibility of the student, and therefore a form is not provided by the teachers;
  • The use of simple calculators, as well as scientific and graphic machines, is permitted, provided that the latter allow the activation (and have activated) of the exam mode;
  • Students may not have in their possession mobile phones, so-called smart watches, glasses with integrated electronic devices, or any other electronic device other than a calculator and simple watch, and students must ensure that they hand over all unauthorized devices to the teacher for safekeeping before the start of the exam.

The mere discovery of a breach of the above-mentioned rules implies the immediate cancellation of the written exam, with consequent superior participation for disciplinary proceedings for fraud, as well as the non-assignment of a grade for the Course Unit.


Final Grade:

The final grade will be equal to the sum of the grades obtained in each of the assessment elements (two assignment works and the written test). Students who obtain a final grade equal to or higher than 9.50 points will be approved.
