Bachelor in Civil Enginnering

Course Objectives

The Civil Engineer graduated from the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Coimbra is able to develop research activities, conception, study, design, manufacture, execution, supervision and control of quality in the area of training, both in central and local government services, and in the private sector. A Civil Engineer trained in ISEC can also carry out tasks on consultancy and project firms, integrating research and development teams, and teaching of technical and vocational training.
The duration of the study cycle is six semesters, for three curricular years.
The degree does not contemplate any alternative paths (branches). Obtaining qualification results from the approval in the curricular units of the study plan and achieving 180 ECTS.

Access Conditions

Candidates may enroll the degree in Civil Engineering through National Access Call, Special Calls or by way of change of Institution/course pair.
For the National Access Call, entrance exams, up to and including the academic year 2020/2021, are as follows:
(07) Physics and Chemistry
(16) Mathematics.
Minimum Classifications: Application grade (95 points); Entrance tests (95 points).

Learning Objectives

The primary aim of the Civil Engineering study cycle is to academically prepare the engineering student for professional practice. The Civil Engineering study plan provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the following areas: 1. Basic mathematics and physics; 2. Fundamental concepts of Civil Engineering; 3. Management techniques that are relevant to engineering and engineers; 4. Professional and ethical responsibilities of the engineer; 5. Impact of engineering solutions in a global context.
This degree course also develops the following skills: 1. Intellectual skills – students are able to analyse and solve engineering problems, design systems and apply professional judgments to balance risks, costs, benefits, safety and impact; 2. Practical skills – students can plan and execute safely a series of experiments, prepare technical sketches and drawings, prepare technical reports, use computational tools and packages; 3. Transferable skills – students are able to communicate effectively throughout drawings, work as a member of a team, use information and communications technologies, and learn independently and effectively for the purpose of continuing professional development and in a wider context throughout their career. The study plan comprises three years of academic study.

Access to Superior Studies

Graduates in Civil Engineering may apply for master’s degrees (2nd cycle studies) in the Civil Engineering area or related scientific areas.
