This UC contributes to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda by developing knowledge to support the Sustainable Development Goals. SDG15: Life on Earth is directly targeted by the UC, while SDG1: Eradication of Poverty, SDG2: Zero Hunger, and SDG13: Climate Action are indirectly targeted. It is desirable to have previous knowledge in these areas.
The syllabus contents are organized comprehensively, covering concepts related to the natural supports of ecosystems—soil, water, and atmosphere—including their structure, functioning, and valuation, as well as the processes leading to their degradation and strategies for their recovery and restoration. Environmental systems modeling is an essential tool for decision-making and implementing nature-based solutions in designing recovery and restoration strategies, along with mitigation and adaptation to global changes, while considering social, environmental, and economic factors. The content offered in this course enables students to acquire and develop knowledge that, combined with the analysis and discussion of practical cases, allows them to achieve the targeted competencies.
The sustainability of natural and productive systems, along with the growing demand for a global paradigm shift in their exploitation, has been taking a prominent place on the priority lists of populations and organizations. Responses and solutions are required in the context of global changes (including e.g. Population growth, land use changes, and climate change).
The objective of this course is to provide skills related to: 1. The importance of soils in both natural and productive systems; 2. The biophysical structure and associated functional processes; 3. Development of natural resources and sustainable productive systems; and 4. modelling of environmental systems. The development of these topics will enable students to acquire skills related to fundamental concepts in the sustainability of natural and productive systems and in the formulation of solutions conceptually aligned with nature-based approaches.
Programa
1. Role of natural supports and their interaction in agricultural and forest systems: 1.1. Basic concepts, soil-water-vegetation-atmosphere interactions; 1.2. Degradation processes; 1.3. Nature-based solutions to recover and restore degraded systems.
2. Biophysical structure and associated functional processes: 2.1. Characterization of agricultural and forest ecosystems; 2.2. Biodiversity and ecosystem services.
3. Valuation of natural resources and sustainable production systems: 3.1. Traditional production systems; 3.2. chemical composition of lignocellulosic materials; 3.3. Determination of lignocellulosic material constituents; 3.4. valorisation processes.
4. Modeling of environmental systems: 4.1. Vulnerability/risk mapping to support decision-making in remediation and valuation of natural resources/residues; 4.2. Climate risks and environmental sustainability. Energy transition and emerging critical natural products.
The teaching approach will be based on self-learning, starting with an introduction to fundamental concepts through interactive and participatory lectures, followed by the development of practical case studies that foster autonomy in the students' knowledge development and scientific thinking. Missions include field trips, laboratory work, data processing and analysis, and modeling of the investigated environmental systems. The final assessment will involve presenting and defending a final project. The written project will count for 60%, while the oral component will account for 40%.
