Bachelor in Biomedical Enginnering

Course Objectives

The program aims to train professionals with practical skills across a broad range of Biomedical Engineering domains, including instrumentation in healthcare, both at the diagnostic and monitoring/therapeutic levels, prosthetics and rehabilitation, bioinformatics, and the application of artificial intelligence techniques to medical data analysis.

While emphasizing a strong theoretical foundation, the course equips students with the necessary tools for effectively addressing practical challenges in their professional careers, fostering innovation, and encouraging lifelong learning, including the pursuit of further studies at the Master’s (2nd cycle) and Doctoral (3rd cycle) levels.

The curriculum is carefully designed, ensuring that previously acquired knowledge in Basic Sciences and Engineering Sciences, particularly in Electronics and Instrumentation, Computer Science, and Mechanics, is applied to solving specific healthcare-related problems. This integration occurs in the Biomedical Engineering Specialty Sciences course units, culminating in the development of a practical, laboratory-based, corporate, and/or scientific research project within the Project/Internship course unit.

Learning Objectives

The program aims to train professionals with expertise across a broad spectrum of Biomedical Engineering domains, while maintaining a strong foundation in Basic Sciences, which are essential for a better understanding of the principles underlying (bio)medical equipment and instrumentation, as well as for the development of prosthetics and the analysis of medical data and imaging.

To achieve this, the curriculum defines both general and specific competencies that, together, ensure students’ effective performance in their future professional careers.
General Competencies:

These are embedded in the level of rigor required across all course units and the work methodologies instilled in students. The most relevant include:

Oral and written communication skills
Autonomous lifelong learning abilities
Ability to work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams
Decision-making and entrepreneurial mindset
Commitment to quality, including adherence to professional and ethical responsibilities

Specific Competencies:

Key competencies include:

Knowledge in Health Sciences, enabling students to understand human body functions and biological molecules and tissues, facilitating communication with medical professionals.
Strong command of Basic Sciences, particularly:
Mathematics, crucial for signal and medical image acquisition and processing, as well as data interpretation and result analysis.
Physics, essential for understanding physiological processes and the functionality of Biomedical Instrumentation.
Expertise in Engineering Sciences, including:
Computer Science, focusing on programming, intelligent data analysis, and bioinformatics.
Mechanics, fundamental for biomechanical modeling and simulation, particularly in prosthetic development.
Electronics and Instrumentation, fostering strong problem-solving skills, particularly in Biomedical Engineering Specialty Sciences.

Additionally, the program emphasizes innovation in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, such as the use of new biosensors supported by artificial intelligence, and the application of advanced (bio)materials in prosthetic and artificial organ design. Furthermore, it covers the design, installation, and management of (bio)medical equipment projects, incorporating knowledge in Economics and Business Management to support effective healthcare technology implementation and maintenance.

Access to Superior Studies

The Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering provides access to 2nd cycle (Master’s) programs in the field of Biomedical Engineering, allowing graduates to deepen their knowledge—particularly in programs such as the Master’s in Biomedical Instrumentation at ISEC.

Additionally, graduates may also pursue related fields, such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Mechanical Engineering.
