Teaching Methodologies
To achieve the objectives of the curricular unit, the teaching methodologies are based on:
1. In the presentation by the teacher of contents related to the theoretical aspects of this curricular unit;
2. Demonstration of practices by the teachers and their realization by the students in the operation of the ESAC, in the stables and in the arena;
3. Study visits to farms and equestrian centers in the region;
4. In oriented bibliographic research on some topics of interest;
Learning Results
This Curricular Unit aims to provide students with general knowledge to develop skills and competences that will allow them to:
• Know the national and foreign breeds of horses, as well as their respective skills;
• Identify the horse’s nutritional needs at all stages of its life and plan its respective food management;
• Plan the best accommodation for the horses and take care of their welfare needs;
• Monitor and manage the reproductive management of horses;
• Know the main uses of horses and adapt each animal according to its temperament and physical condition;
• Ensure the correct hygiene-sanitary and foot management of each animal in a stud;
• Know how to provide all procedures related to the legal documentation of horses and a stud farm.

1) The origin and evolution of horses.
2) The different races Portuguese and foreign and their skills.
3) Housing.
4) Equine Reproduction – equine reproductive management techniques and semen technology.
5) Equine feeding management.
6) Animal hygiene and health.
7) Basic knowledge about riding and teaching the horse.
