Beef Cattle Production

Teaching Methodologies

– Expository methodology for the presentation of theoretical concepts
– Monitoring of practical cases that illustrate the subjects presented and allow the perception by the students of the application of the concepts enunciated
– Analysis of articles, viewing of videos and case studies
– Contact with ESAC’s farm and others nearby.

Learning Results

1. Identify the various actors, potentials and existing constraints in the beef cattle production process;
2. Know different evaluating methods of beef cattle, with a view to their use as breeders;
3. Equate different beef cattle production systems, given different feed conditions and the particular objectives of those involved in the production process.

Program

1 – Breeds and production objectives
– Main breeds used, autochthonous and allochthonous, for beef production;
– Types of farms and agents involved in the beef production chain;
– Beef production reality in the national and global market.
2 – Animal growth and development
– Weight growth and differential growth;
– Precocity applied to beef production;
– Relation between the concepts of animal growth and development and precocity of beef breeds and its consequences for the meat quality and production costs;
3 – Rationalization of beef cattle production systems
– Methods of phenotypic evaluation and valuation;
– Importance of record keeping at beef farm level;
– Articulation of fodder availabilities with the attainment of objectives;
– Annual planning of the reproductive and feed management, considering the need to rationalize the beef cattle production system.
