Teaching Methodologies

In order to be able to confer the proposed competences, the teaching / learning process is based on:
Theoretical lectures
Practical classes with models of animal skeletons and bones, organs from slaughterhouse and anatomical models, microscopic observations of the subjects related to embryology, osteology and histology.
Use of audiovisual means to demonstrate certain physiological mechanisms.
Laboratory classes demonstrating physiological mechanisms.

Learning Results

The Curriculum Unit covers Anatomy, a science which includes the structure of the animal body as a whole, Physiology, study of the functions of the different structures and Histology, which consists of microscopic studies of these structures. These studies are fundamental in biotechnological program as anatomical understanding is important for health fields.
The UC allows for the student to understand normal tissue structure (macroscopic and microscopic) and the possible alterations that can occur in these tissues.
1.   Know the animal’s exterior and the general organization of animal skeleton in comparison with the human skeleton
2.   Know the location of the different systems and organs present in the animal and human body – a Comparative study (Splanchnology)
3.   Understand the macroscopic and microscopic structures and functions of different organs present in an animal body.
4.   Know the location of different endocrine glands, their macroscopic and microscopic structures and functions.

Program

The program contents are organized into 2 modules:
Module 1. (50%)
Study of the external structures of the animal and the definitions and terms used in anatomy.
Skeletal organization of different animal species – A Comparative study
Anatomical position of the various organic structures in the animal body and their relationship with bone structure.
General Notions of histology: Animal cell structure and tissues. Processing of tissues for histological studies.
Embryogenesis of different animal species.
Anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the muscle (Macroscopic and microscopic structures).
Module 2. (50%)
Anatomy and physiology of the circulatory and lymphatic system, the respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems (Macroscopic and microscopic structures).
Anatomy and physiology of the digestive system of different animal species
Location and function of some endocrine glands
Pathological alterations observed in some tissues (Microscopic observations)

Grading Methods

Avaliação Por Exame
  • - A avaliação em exame consiste numa prova escrita [50%] e numa prova prática [50%]. - 100.0%
Avaliação Contínua
  • - Módulo 2: Teste escrito + Prova prática - 50.0%
  • - Módulo 1: Teste escrito + Prova prática - 50.0%
