Teaching Methodologies

1. Exposure of classical themes; 2. Visit to dairy farms in the region, with participation in daily tasks; 3. Execution of practical tasks at sheepbarn of ESAC; 4. Literature reasearch under faculty guidance.

Learning Results

1. Know the situation and determinants for the efficient and qualitative production in dairy systems;
2. Know all the routine procedures of conducting a farm of sheep and / or goats, productive skills and their differences, the importance of the sector in the regional economy and the constraints on its development

Program

Objective 1 – Dairy Cattle: a) the main political, legal and structural constraints to which Portuguese farms are subject; (b) the main factors affecting the quality of milk from its synthesis to its arrival in the dairy industry; c) operation of the production system in particular with regard to food, accommodation, milking, sanitation, breeding and breeding; (d) replacement of breeding stock and rearing of heifers.
Objective 2 – Small Ruminants: (a) national sheep and goat breeds and their skills; b) physiological mechanisms involved in feeding, nutrition, reproduction, lactation and growth and in the pathology of the species; c) norms of general management, alimentary, reproductive and sanitary, proper to each species; (d) characteristics of milk, meat and wool production in each species and their economic importance; e) related biometric systems and structures involved; f) production systems and regional differences, constraints and objectives to be pursued.
