1The learning objectives are: 1) To know the state of the environment and the socio-political context in Portugal, Europe and worldwide. To understand the concept of sustainable development and environmental management. To understand how they are structured and how to articulate the right environmental policy and promote environmental protection. 2) To know the concept of pollution and its origins. To recognize the role of the application of environmental technologies in various fields. To understand the importance of environmental ethics in environmental protection.

Program

Part 1 – Sustainable development and the current/future environmental challenges and their interconnections with the socioeconomic and political dimensions at a National, European and Worldwide scale. – Environmental principles and values, environmental policies and laws towards the promotion of environmental quality. The main Portuguese environmental legislation. – Professional and environmental ethics. – The main stakeholders in environmental protection. – The role of information systems in various domains of environmental protection. Part 2 Module I The development of the social model and its means of production over time and consequent environmental problems. The concept of sustainable development. The notions of environmental policy and legislation, the hierarchy of laws, characteristics and principles of environmental law, administrative law in the protection of the environment. Module II The concept of pollution, sources and types of their general control mechanisms.
