Biodiversity and Conservation I

Learning Results

1.Understand the concept of biodiversity at various levels of biological organisation and recognise the importance of biodiversity and its conservation.
2. Know the main threats to biodiversity and recognise threatened species in Portugal.
3. Know ex-situ conservation strategies.

Program

1. Introduction: concept of Biodiversity; Conservation Biology as a science; relationship between Conservation Biology and other sciences.
2. Importance of Biodiversity: types, patterns and levels; state of biodiversity at a global level; current and emerging issues affecting biodiversity and its conservation in positive and negative ways.
3. Threats to Biodiversity: habitat destruction and fragmentation, overexploitation of resources, pollution, invasive alien species, climate change, diseases, etc.
