Teaching Methodologies
1. Exposição formal para transmissão de conteúdos teóricos;
2. Aulas teórico-práticas para identificação e caracterização de espécies;
3. Saídas de campo para observação in situ de áreas com problemas de invasão sujeitas a diferentes fases de planos de gestão – recolha de dados, análise da situação e proposta de eventuais alterações;
4. Pesquisa bibliográfica especializada, orientada pelo docente, com vista à realização de trabalhos;5. Apresentação oral e discussão dos trabalhos.
Learning Results
a. Know and be able to discuss the main issues related to the problem of biological invasions
b. Know how to evaluate and / or recognize the main impacts of invasive species
c. To know the legal instruments, at European and national level, applicable to exotic and invasive species
d. Recognize the invasive species present in Portugal, including both plants and animals
e. To know the action plans in force for certain species
f. To be able to participate in the elaboration of proposals and in the implementation of the various phases of a management plan for invasive species and invaded habitats.
g. Be able to select and apply the most appropriate control methods to particular species and locations
h. Know the main protocols of risk analysis for exotic species and know how to do a risk analysis
Program
1. Introduction to biological invasions: terminology, problem size and process
2. Impacts and attributes of invasive species
3. Invasibility of ecosystems
4. Legal framework: EU Reg. No. 113/2014; National legislation and competent entities
5. Detailed characterization of invasive species in Portugal and, if any, their action plans
7. Phases of invasive management plans, including case study analysis: – prevention; Early detection and rapid response; Definition of objectives; Prioritization of areas and species to intervene; Selection of control techniques appropriate to species and sites; Implementation of the intervention plan: eradication, containment, control (initial, follow-up and maintenance) or mitigation; Post intervention monitoring and evaluation; Validation or Review
8. Control methodologies: mechanical, chemical, biological, fire controlled, integrated controls, etc.
9. Assessing the invasive potential of new species and finding safe alternatives
