Teaching Methodologies
The teaching methodology will be the delivery of seminars/workshops by specialists and the discussion of the contents taught between the specialists and the PhD students. The PhD students will then have to choose individually a cutting edge theme that they will explore and deliver an essay to the members of the PhD coordination board.
Students are expected to deliver an essay aligned with their PhD thesis, on a critical evaluation of a cutting edge theme of their choice. This is expected to increase the capacity to analyze critically a problem and develop solutions, these are skill of utmost relevance to whom wants to attain a PhD degree.
Learning Results
The Seminar curricular unit aims at providing the students with an overall view of cutting edge themes, relevant to the sustainable development and the competitiveness, whenever possible focused at the Portuguese Centro Region. To this end, CERNAS researchers and the representatives of the key institutions related to Agriculture, food and the environment (public institutions, companies, NGOs) will be invited to deliver their views on the present situation and future perspectives.
Another set of seminars will be delivered based on the relevance and cutting hedge character of research. These themes will be chosen primordially among themes supported by RTD projects developed by members of staff belonging to the four involved institutions, relevant to the agriculture (latu sensu) sector.
Students are expected to develop a holistic knowledge of cutting edge themes and establish a critical vision on the pros and cons of their implementation or development.
Program
The contents are related with the cutting edge research relevant to the sustainable development of the agriculture sector. To start with, context provider seminars will be commended to key personalities operating in the sector. The aim is to set the context (international, European, national and regional), make the inventory of the strengths and weaknesses, and foresee the potential future strategies.
Another set of seminars will be delivered on cutting edge themes of relevance for the country and the region, grouped on clusters such as Forest Sustainable Development, Advance plant biotechnology and production techniques, Animal fertility and husbandry, Food processing technologies, Marketing and food chain management, Advance environmental techniques for sustainable production and competitiveness and the application of new technologies to the agriculture and environmental sectors.
