Teaching Methodologies
The theoretical classes are aimed at the detailed presentation of the program contents. Use an expository-active
methodology, appealing the direct intervention of the students. In the practical part of the curricular unit it’s
privileged the execution of practical laboratory assignments, explanations and discussion of clinical cases. The
evaluation will include a written assessment, the presentation of a group project on a topic of the in the program
contents and a report on practical activities.

O aluno deve adquirir conhecimentos de:
• Fundamentos teóricos subjacentes ao metabolismo de hidratos de carbono, aminoácidos, proteínas, ferro,
purinas e pirimidinas.
• Parâmetros laboratoriais indicados para o diagnóstico e monitorização das patologias associadas a alterações do
metabolismo.
O aluno deve adquirir aptidões de:
• Compreender os parâmetros laboratoriais indicados para o diagnóstico e monitorização das patologias
associadas a alterações do metabolismo, de modo a ser possível fornecer informações laboratoriais clinicamente
relevantes;
O aluno deve adquirir competências de:
• Compreender as diversas patologias associadas a alterações no metabolismo de hidratos de carbono,
aminoácidos, proteínas, ferro, purinas e pirimidinas.
• Selecionar os parâmetros laboratoriais indicados no diagnóstico e/ou monitorização das referidas patologias;
• Validar e interpretar de forma crítica os resultados obtidos.

Metabolism of carbohydrates:
-Hypo and hyperglycaemia system;
-Diabetes and its acute complications and chronic;
-Laboratory Assessment and associated pathologies.
Amino acids metabolism:
-Laboratory evaluation and associated pathologies. Protein metabolism:-specific proteins;
-Laboratory evaluation of hepatic function and associated pathologies;
-Laboratory evaluation of muscle and heart diseases.
Iron metabolism:
-Porphyry and haem synthesis;
-Haem catabolism and synthesis of bilirubin synthesis;
-Laboratory evaluation and associated pathologies.
Purines and pyrimidines metabolism:
-Uric acid synthesis;
-Laboratory evaluation and associated pathologies.
