Teaching Methodologies
In TheoreticalPractical lessons the expository and inquisitive method is used during the explanation of the theoretical
subjects and exercises are solved in groups and individually.
In PracticalLaboratory classes soil tests are carried out and students should perform one individual practical test and two laboratory team reports.
In Tutorial classes students will be supervised, through the clarification of doubts, exercises resolution and guidance of the laboratory reports.
Learning Results
Goals: to know theoretical and practical concepts in geotechnics and main methods of in situ investigations and using them to solve problems on structures and geotechnical works.
Generic skills: ability for acquisition and application of knowledge and for solving problems? ability for selflearning and for working in team.
Specific skills: knowledge of different types of rocks and soils, to carry out basic soil tests.
Program
1. Introduction: Construction use, foundations, slopes, excavations, construction materials, quarries, ornamental rocks. Sustainability, management and reuse of excavated materials. Ecossystemic services provided by soils and rocks. Earth construction. Geothermic. Evolution, degradation e deterioration. Contamination and decontamination.
2. Rock analysis and classification: Composition of the Earth. Rock forming minerals. Rock groups: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Mechanical and chemical weathering. Geotechnical Classification of Rock. Weathering.
