Teaching Methodologies

Learning methodologies will include lectures, discussions and problem solving (individually or in groups). It is envisaged that students will also present reports (in writing and orally) as a way of developing communication skills.
Evaluation will be done based on a final individual written exam in which students need to get at least half of the full quotation.

Learning Results

to understand the concepts associated with sustainability and sustainable development, especially in the times we’re living in
to know how to apply the idea of sustainability in the urban environment by working different components: urban design, land use, transportation, energy, economy, governance, etc
to develop competences of analysing the urban environment at local level, from a sustainability point of view, and to put forward proposals for its improvement
to develop general competences in the areas of communication, investigation and selflearning, evaluation and decision making

1. Sustainable development
Introduction? Concepts and dimensions of sustainability (models)? Principles of sustainable development? Sustainable development goals 2030? instruments and applications
2. Urban sustainability
Characteristics of urban sustainability? dimensions of urban sustainability (land use and urban design, transports, green cities, urban ecology and rehabilitation, energy and use of materials, environmental justice and social equity, economic development)? the Aalborg chart and commitments? urban form and sustainability
3. Sustainable cities
Mechanisms to enable sustainable cities (effective governance, innovative financing, urban planning for an effective land market)? Strategies and possible actions for sustainable cities? sustainable practices in urban management (e.g. Local Agenda 21)? sustainability of the built environment? the cities of the future
