Excavation Retaining Structures

Soils Mechanics and Foundations

Teaching Methodologies

The teaching methodology is based on theoretical-practical classes in which, after exposing the main theoretical concepts, regulations or platforms, students are invited to debate the subject through the discussion of practical and real examples. Group work is encouraged through the presentation of research topics, and the oral presentation of the main results is mandatory.

Learning Results

It is expected that the student learns how to:
– identify the main technologies of earth support structures in deep urban construction;
– know and apply the methodologies used to the design of sheet-pile walls;
– judge about the most appropriated construction process, depending on the characteristics of the work and the terrain; – predict the response of retaining structures when subjected to seismic actions;
– make decisions and communicate them within the scope of design, inspection and/or construction activities.

Program

Sheet-pile walls:
Definitions; Legislation and standards; Types of flexibles earth retaining structures; sheet piles; Excavations supported on metal profiles; “Berlin” and “Munich” type walls; Diaphragm and pile walls; Self-supporting, mono-supported and multi-supported flexible retaining walls.
Stresses and designing:
Classical design methods: (free and fixed end supports); Rowe’s method; Constructive aspects; Theoretical lateral earth pressure and Terzaghi and Peck diagrams; Calculation of stress;
External stability:
Stability of the bottom of the excavation; Excavations in clays and sands; Stability in relation to vertical actions; Overall stability.
