Teaching Methodologies

Lecture (T) classes will targeted the theoretical foundations of the course, practical (TP) classes target questions resolution and laboratory (PL) classes the application of the acquired concepts. In lecture classes the theoretical concepts exposition will be performed by Powerpoint projection. In the practical classes the different chapters exercise sheets are solved. In laboratory classes practical work to identify cell structure and morphology will be performed. All study material is made available through the Moodle platform. Students can choose one of the following evaluation methodologies: i) continuous evaluation or ii) evaluation by final exam. Continuous evaluation will be accomplished by periodic written tests (15 values) and a practical laboratory test (5 values). Evaluation by final exam will be conducted by a practical laboratory test (5 values) and a written exam at the end of the semester (15 values). The students need approval in both exams for the course approval.

Learning Results

The main objective of this course is to provide students with the fundamental concepts of Cellular Biology, so that they are able to understand the basic concepts in the area of Life Sciences. It is intended that students be able to: i) recognize and apply in practice cell study methodologies; ii) identify and distinguish cellular structures and function in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells; iii) recognize the structure of cell membranes and the main transport mechanisms; iv) identify the cell reproduction processes in eukaryotes and prokaryotes.

Program

1. The study of the cell
Origin, evolution and cell diversity. Cell study methodologies. Optical and electronic microscopy fundamentals. Main microscopy applications. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
2. Structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
Morphological characteristics of prokaryotic microorganisms. Cellular structures and function in prokaryotic cells. Cellular structures and function in eukaryotic cells. Latent forms.
3. The plasma membrane and transmembrane transport
Structure and function of biological membranes. Mobility and asymmetry. Dynamics of membranes. Transport through the membrane: Simple Diffusion, facilitated diffusion, active transport and group translocation.
4. Cell division mechanisms
Reproduction of prokaryotic microorganisms. Cell cycle of eukaryotic organisms. Reproduction in eukaryotic organisms: mitosis, meiosis and gametogenesis.
