Teaching Methodologies

In the theoretical classes we use the lecture method during the explanation of theoretical issues. In the laboratorial component, students have training sessions in CNC milling machine and create CNC programs. Some CNC programs are manually created and others are generated by CAM software. At the end the programs are loaded into CNC milling machine and performed to obtain parts.

Learning Results

Understand the main operations to obtain parts by chip removal, starting from an initial form, until their final dimensions and shape; To select tools and cutting parameters for machining operations; To build manually CNC programs for basic milling operations; To use Computer Aided Manufacturing software programs to create CNC programs for advanced machining operations; To perform the major procedures on a CNC milling machine.

Program

  1. Fundaments of operations to obtain parts by chip removal: Turning, milling, drilling, tapping, griding and polishing; Chip formation and different shapes of the chip; function of cooling and methodology to apply cooling fluid.
  2. Numerical control of milling machines: Main CNC codes; programming procedures and cycles to simplify the programming; use and training of CNC milling machine (Leadwell) and its controller (Fanuc – Séries OM).
  3. Tools for measure dimensions.
  4. CAD/CAM Technologies: Methodology to build a machining program; post processors; CNC machines with 2, 3, 4 and 5 axis.
  5. Software for Computer Aided Manufacturing: Milling toolpaths for 2D and 3D geometries; simulation of programmed toolpaths and post processors.
