Teaching Methodologies

The teaching-learning process is based on the articulation of different methodologies:
– Expositive component of theoretical principles, using audiovisual resources and participative exposure strategies, complemented by case studies and guided research work oriented, individually or in group.
Component of practical application, with analysis of texts, practical cases and resolution of exercises, as well as activities of tutorial orientation.

Learning Results

1. To understand the perspective of economics as a social science and the relationships between economic agents.
2. To identify and define the fundamental economic problems.
3. To understand the functioning of competitive markets and the effects of different policy options.
4. To know and understand the evolution of Portuguese society according to different perspectives.
5. To apply research methods and techniques in the social sciences.
6. To know and apply the main concepts and methodologies of economics and sociology.

Program

1. ECONOMICS 1.1. Economic science – introductory concepts. 1.2. Economic agents and their functions – the economic circuit. 1.3. Fundamental economic problems. 1.4. Concepts of opportunity cost, willingness to pay and to receive. 1.5. Production possibilities frontier. 1.6. Market functioning in perfect competition: demand, supply and market equilibrium. 1.7. Elasticity of demand and supply concept and its applications. 1.8. Introduction to macroeconomic policy – effects of different policy options. 2. SOCIOLOGY 2.1. Indicators of demographic, social and economic characterization. 2.2. Causes and consequences of the great social transformations that occurred in Portugal in the last decades. 2.3. Economic and social change in specific territories or sectors. 2.4. Main data collection procedures used in the social sciences. 2.5. Research methods more appropriate to specific cases. 2.6. Development of surveys in the framework of social research projects. 2.7. Analysis of information obtained from documental research, observation, and inquiry.
