Teaching Methodologies

The methodology presented is based on practical work, permitting students to acquire skills of translation and interpretation, both for Portuguese Sign Language as for Portuguese Sign, through exercises conducted in the classroom. In this way, students will learn the different techniques of translation/interpretation for Portuguese Sign Language and Portuguese Language, as well as explore concepts and binding methods of interpretation of the message of the source text.
Student’s assessment will follow these itens:
a) Preparation of theoretical and practical works throughout the semester = 10%
b) Final work = 40%
c) One Test = 50%
Final exam = 100%

Learning Results

Law No.89/99, July 5, the law which defines the conditions of access to the profession of interpreter of Portuguese Sign, referred to the functions and duties of an interpreter of Sign Language. Thus, it is the responsibility of the interpreters from PSL: prepare the conditions of communication process according to the different situations or contexts; Interpreting and translating, simultaneously or consecutively, the information in sign language for oral or written language, using the techniques of translation, translation and interpretation. With this curricular Unit aims to: provide students with basic knowledge about the Act of translation/interpr, possible situations and translation techniques that may be used; introduce concepts and binding methods of interpretation of the message of the source text.

The contents of this course will focus on themes such as:
1- Consecutive Interpretation vs simultaneous Interpretation
2- Colonomos’ model and Woodcok’s model
3- Interpretation into Portuguese sign language
4- Interpretation into Portuguese (or interpretation for voice)
5- Role-play
6- Translation errors vs Failures of translation
7- Linguistic-cultural Adaptations
8- Location of the action in space vs space parser
