Workshop: Report Writing

Theoretical exposition of the concepts and techniques of research, collection, selection and treatment of information will be articulated with the analysis of texts and journalistic works that stimulate the capacity of reflection on the exercise of information and the best practices in the journalistic profession. The curricular unit assumes an introductory character to the exercise of journalism and the possibility of student participation in ongoing collaborative projects within the scope of the degree in Social Communication.

According to the Continuous Assessment Scheme, learning will be assessed through the student’s individual performance in the classroom (50%) and their participation in the group work(s) planned for the semester (50%).

According to the Assessment Regime by Final Exam, students must register for the assessment by exam on the dates provided for this purpose and following the rules set by the ESEC. 

This curricular unit represents the initiation of students with the techniques of collecting, selecting, hierarchizing and writing information. It is intended that, at the end of the semester, students master the main techniques of journalistic production, being able to collect and process information, write texts for journalistic publications, title and caption.

I. Researching, collecting, sorting and processing information

I. 1. Working with personal sources: contacts list, prospective interview; media events and press briefing.

I.2. The documentary sources: press review, press release, features, blogs, wikis and other online resources, databases, archives and libraries.

I.3. Add, delete, and prioritize information.

II. Report writing

II.1. Fundamental principles of journalistic writing. Clarity, simplicity, precision, conciseness, accuracy.

II.2. The facts, interpretations and opinions.

II.3. Stylebooks, editorial lines and type of publications.

II.4. The attribution to the sources and forms of citation, the observance of the code of ethics in the identification of the news actors.

II.5. Titration, lead and body text news.

II.6. Articulation text infographics. Subtitling.

II.7. Journalistic writing practice
