Teaching Methodologies

The programmatic contents are presented, analyzed and developed in sessions focusing on the development of analysis activities and critical reflection on issues related to the Aging Psycholoy. The exhibition, questions for reflection, work and group dynamics, as well as analysis and display of short texts are some of the strategies adopted.

The evaluation follows the rules of procedure of ESEC. The students choose one of the following ways: continuous evaluation or exam.

The continuous evaluation includes:

– Individual-test (60% of the final grade)

– Oral and written presentation of a working group (30% of the final grade)

– Carrying out tasks proposed in class (10% of the final grade).

The exam consists in a written test on all matters summarized.

Learning Results

The Aging Psychology curricular unit seeks that the students taking a degree in Social Gerontology know the steps and processes of psychological development in advanced adulthood. Thus, it is intended that the students achieve the following objectives:

Know the psychological processes of normal aging on cognitive and psychosocial domains;

Understand the impact in the lives of the elderly, the changes at the level of psychological functioning;

Be able to use and apply in future professional practice the knowledge regarding the psychosocial processes of aging as well as intervention strategies learned.

3.            Introductory concepts related to the development in adulthood.

 

II – Development in Old Age

1.            Features and aging processes of the cognitive and psychosocial domains.

2.            Changes and / or stability of psychological functions.

 

III – Successful Aging

1.            Models of aging and successful aging.

2.            Intervention strategies.

 

IV – Issues related to aging (optional subjects)

1.            Myths and Misconceptions about Aging.

2.            Representations and Experiences of Menopause.

3.            The Wisdom.

4.            Positive Psychology and Aging.

5.            Dealing with …

a.            The Retirement.

b.            The Chronic Disease(s)  in Advanced Adulthood.

c.            The Caregiver Stress.

d.            The Loss and Grief.
