Teaching Methodologies

To achieve the objectives of the course unit the teaching methodologies are based on:
1. Exposition by the teacher of content related to the theoretical aspects of this curricular unit;
2. Demonstration by the teacher of practices related with the curricular unit, making use of the Laboratory of Animal Reproduction of the ESAC, which presents excellent conditions for the thematic, also in what concerns small animals.
3. Implementation by the students of practices previously demonstrated by teachers.
4. Bibliographical research on important themes for the curricular unit

Learning Results

The learning objective of this Curricular Unit (CU) includes the introduction to animal reproduction, which should be understood as a prerequisite to other CUs later in the course plan.

The aim of this Curricular Unit is to provide the student with knowledge on spermatogenesis, oogenesis, primary and secondary sexual characters, the estrous cycle in mammalian species, the different reproductive cycles in oviparous species, semen collection, and artificial insemination.

Program

1. Spermatogenesis;

2. Oogenesis and folliculogenesis;

3. Sexual development and primary and secondary sexual characteristics;

4. Differences between the estrous cycle of mammalian species;

5. Differences between the oviparous cycle of oviparous species;

6. Semen collection, evaluation, and preservation;

7. Artificial insemination.
