Base Knowledge
Notions about materials, fundamentals of mechanics and strength of materials
Teaching Methodologies
In theoretical-practical classes, expository and inquisitive methods are used. During the approach to programmatic issues, critical thinking and physical understanding are encouraged, with active participation in classes.
Students will solve exercises individually or in groups.
Students will also be encouraged to carry out bibliographic research on the topics covered. The general discussion of the topics taught (exchange of ideas between professor and students) and the clarification of doubts will be essential for students to understand and consolidate the technical knowledge defined in the program.
In classes, in addition to individual learning skills, teamwork will be explored by clarifying doubts and carrying out assignments.
Learning Results
Goals: Learn the theory and practice about the execution, production and design of reinforced concrete structures. Learn about the latest technological developments in production of concrete structures: eco-efficient concretes.
Generic skills: Application of knowledge; increase the understanding of issues related with urban space; making judgments/decisions; increase the ability to communicate and discuss technological issues; development of critical sense and self-learning.
Specific skills: Acquire knowledge and understanding in the area of reinforced concrete structures; learn the fundamental principles about the behavior of reinforced concrete structures; identify and understand the functioning of different types of structural members of reinforced concrete; acquire knowledge about the rules to be followed in execution of reinforced concrete structures; learn the basic principles and requirements involved in the design of reinforced concrete elements.
Program
1. Scope
- Historical notes about reinforced concrete as a structural material.
- Eco-efficient concretes
- Building more sustainable concrete structures
- General notions about structural systems of concrete buildings
- General principles related with the behavior of reinforced concrete structures (the minimum necessary to understand their functioning or to be involved in any task involving concrete structures): constitutive laws and material properties, steel-concrete bond.
2. General principles and calculation rules (aim to understand the complexity and the various steps required to carry out a project of concrete structures)
- Principles to check the safety of reinforced concrete structures. Ultimate limit states. Principles relating to cracking and deformation of reinforced concrete structures. Structural elements: beams, columns, slabs and reinforced concrete footings.
- Introduction to codes involved in the design of concrete structures, namely, EN1992.
3. Constructive provisions and execution (understand how these types of structures are implemented and what rules they have to respect)
- General recommendations concerning reinforcements.
- Constructive Recommendations related to concrete members and structures.
- Execution rules for reinforced concrete structures (EN 13670).
