Teaching Methodologies

The approach to the curricular unit is based mainly on the expository method. Following the acquisition of the theoretical knowledge will be executed application examples that will include the exchange of ideas, approach and problem solving by the students themselves during the class. In some of the contents of the curricular unit, students will have contact with materials, structures and machines, as well as some experimental tests, which will allow them to consolidate theoretical and theoretical-practical concepts.

Learning Results

The main objectives of the curricular unit are: a) Obtain a basic understanding of materials in terms of class, properties and applications; b) Know and distinguish the different types of heat treatment of steels and understand the respective results; c) Understand the concepts, interpretation, analysis and dimensioning of the main structural elements; d) Understand the procedures involved in the selection and conception of the main machine elements; e) Obtain knowledge in terms of materials and understand their importance in the context of mechanical structures and the organic elements of machines.

Program

Module 1 – Materials:
Classes of materials: metallic, polymeric, ceramic and composite materials;
Mechanical properties of materials: mechanical strength, ductility, toughness and hardness;
Concept of force, elongation, tension and deformation;
Metal alloys: ferrous alloys – unalloyed and bonded steels, cast irons and stainless steels; non-ferrous alloys – aluminum alloys, copper alloys and zinc alloys;
Heat treatment of steels: annealing, tempering, tempering, surface tempering, carburizing and nitriding.

Module 2 – Strength of Materials:
Mechanical forces, support conditions and solicitations;
Structural elements;
Axial solicitation, torsion solicitation and bending solicitation;
Concept of structural dimensioning to resistance and rigidity.

Module 3 – Machine Elements:
