German III (Foreign Languages III)

Base Knowledge

It is recommended that students have completed level A1 or have passed German I and II.

Teaching Methodologies

Use of various methodologies, such as interactive games, spontaneous oral and written production activities, role-play, group work, presentations, etc.

Learning Results

In this semester, students should deepen their language skills and broaden the range of topics on which they can produce oral and/or written discourse.

Among other skills, the student should be able to: make invitations, plan small events, understand and respond to announcements, have complex conversations on the telephone, ask for information in hospitals, shops or banks, and have dialogues with health professionals.

Program

All lessons will be given in German. Portuguese or English may be spoken to clarify any doubts or tasks

German III corresponds to the first half of A2 level. At the end of German IV the student will have sufficient skills to complete A2.

Depending on the students’ performance, most or all of the following topics will be covered:

Subject areas covered:

– Festivals and customs (Christmas, presents, invitations);

– Moving house (rent and equipment); – German cities (monuments, studying abroad, dialects, sharing flats)

– Health (illnesses, pain, doctor’s appointments, the human body)

– Banks and public offices

Expected grammar items:

– Declension in the nominative, accusative and dative

– Personal pronouns in the dative

– Complements in the dative with definite, indefinite, possessive and articleless articles

– Position of complements in the dative and accusative

– Adjectives in the nominative, accusative and dative without an article

– Possessive pronouns in the nominative, accusative and dative

– Prepositions with dative and accusative (Wechselpräpositionen)

– Subordinate sentences with weil and dass

– Reflexive pronouns in the dative and accusative

– Adjectives in the nominative, accusative and dative after definite, indefinite, possessive and articleless articles

– Conditional subordinate sentences with wenn

– Temporal subordinate sentences with als

– Präteritum of regular, irregular, mixed and modal verbs

– darum, deshalb, deswegen, daher
