Base Knowledge

Basic notions of: different energy forms; energy end uses; energy efficiency; renewable energy.

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical: theoretical exposition of various matters; Case-studies presentation. Practical: Problem solving; students familiarization with energy audit´s equipment; Case-studies analysis. Students have weekly voluntary support through instructor’s office hours (6 hours availability, overall).

Learning Results

The main aims of this course unit are: To familiarize students with the basic concepts of energy management and its importance in Asset Management; To know the tariff legislation; To learn the methodology, phases and expected outputs of energy audits; main final energy uses, energy consumption rationalization measures and Energy Management Systems in the industrial and buildings sectors. To know to apply energy consumption rationalization plans, in accordance with current legislation; To acquire technical capacity for decision making aimed at efficient energy management in industry and buildings.

At the end of this course unit the learner is expected to be able: To become familiar with the concepts related to energy use and efficient use of energy; To analyse electricity bills; To know how to prepare and perform energy audits and to prepare energy consumption rationalization plans; To use Sankey diagrams to analyse energy flows; To calculate the specific energy consumption of a product and the impact of certain energy efficiency measures; To investigate and choose efficient technological solutions and be able to argue with the employer or client.

Introduction to Energy Management. Energy Management and its importance in Asset Management. World, European and national energy trends; European and national legislative and strategic frameworks. The Structure of Electric Utility Tariffs; Electricity Bill Analysis; How to choose the best electric tariff option. Energy Audits – Objectives; Types of energy audits; Methodology and energy audit equipment; Energy Audit results. Energy analysis – Sankey diagrams. Preparing an energy audit report. The Energy-Intensive Consumption Management System (SGCIE). Energy Consumption Rationalization Plans (PREn). Buildings Energy Certification System (SCE). Rational Use of Energy. Power reduction; Power factor correction; Lighting systems; Electric Motors; Heat Recovery. Integration of renewable energy systems. Energy Management Systems. Overview of the ISO 50001 Standard.
