Innovations in Imaging and Medical Devices

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical-practical classes will be expository with student interaction using image analysis in printed and digital physical format, through software dedicated to medical images. Recent clinical cases and recent and ongoing innovative investigations with the application of new imaging methods and medical devices will be presented. Continuous assessment will take place by written test (T) that deals with the critical discussion of medical images within the scope of the Cardio-thoracic and Central Nervous System and discussion of a scientific article (A) dedicated to imaging procedures and medical devices. The final grade will follow the following formula: (Tx0,6) + (Ax0,4). The student will be able to choose the evaluation by exam according to the current academic regulation.

Learning Results

Develop knowledge in distinguishing imaging characteristics by modality. Obtain critical awareness in the identification of normal and pathological imaging signals, integrating the various areas of knowledge. Understand the principles of integrating new imaging methods and medical devices into clinical practice.
The student will develop skills to establish reasoning that brings together the characteristics of the diferente modalities of Medical Imaging in isolation or when used in multimodal mode. It will create competencies to define strategies so that the analysis of medical images contributes to the increase of its clinical performance, linking the knowledge obtained with the daily practice. Apply measures and develop work strategies within the scope of Clinical Physiology, complying with the rules of Radiological Protection and Safety. Define new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for innovative devices.

Program

1. Characteristics of the different types of Medical Imaging and their integration in clinical practice within the scope of Clinical Physiology;
2. Imagiological clinical application using ionizing and non-ionizing radiation;
3. Multimodal image: characteristics, requirements and clinical application;
4. Protection against radiation and the safety of patients and professionals in different medical imaging modalities;
5. Imagiological Studies of the Cardiothoracic System, upper airway, cardiac, pulmonary and mediastinal pathology;
6. Imagiological Studies of the Central Nervous System, brain and spinal pathology;
7. Medical devices applied to Clinical Physiology.
