Teaching Methodologies

Laboratory (PL) classes to carry out several experimental works by students in small groups. During the laboratory classes students are confronted with relevant questions, allowing to assess their previous preparation to carry out the experimental work. This method also allows enhancing the understanding of the knowledge acquired by the students. After the conclusion of each work, an oral discussion is performed in which the theoretical concepts involved, and the obtained results, are discussed. Further, the written reports are evaluated.

Learning Results

The main objective of the course is to introduce the student into the Microbiology laboratory techniques, with particular emphasis on basic procedures such as the preparation of culture media, sterilization and aseptic techniques and inoculation techniques. It is intended that students acquire the following competencies: (i) Ability to transfer and isolate cultures under aseptic conditions; (ii) Ability to conduct group work; (iii) Ability to organize and manage work execution; (iv) Ability to report the work (both orally and in written form) and discuss and analyze the experimental results.

Program

The syllabus consists of experimental work in groups of two students. The experimental work includes the execution of experiments, preparation of the written report, and analysis and discussion of experimental results.
Experimental work to be carried out:
1. Methods for quantification of microbial growth.
2. Cultivation of microorganisms: study of physical factors (pH and temperature) that affect its growth
3. Bacterial growth curve and rate. Substrate consumption curve.
4. Assessment of the efficiency of physical and chemical agents for the control of microbial growth
5. Microbiological analysis of water
6. Microbiological analysis of food products
7. Microbiological analysis of soil
8. Wine production
